Mom’s Hair Salon … wait ’til you see this

My first client.

Just a trim. And the application of a brush to certain rarely-brushed peaks at the back of the head. (We should probably do that more often.) End result: she was pleased.

“I should probably brush my hair more than once a month.” “Some of your hair looks like silk, and other parts look like …” “… a little doormat?” “That’s a very accurate description.”

A brush and a very very tiny trim, please. (She has memories of an unhappy hair cut we undertook several years ago.) “The funny thing is that my hair probably looks longer in the after photo!”

[Stomach churning, scissors poised. Oh, his curls!] “Are you sure you want me to cut your hair short? “Yes.” “So you’re really sure?” “Uh huh.”

But oh my, what a sweet little face. I can kiss his sweet neck.

But this is kind of heart-breaking. He’s seeing himself for the first time. How does he feel about the change?

You can see it in his eyes. Is this me? Does this still look like me? His sisters react to their first glimpse with ohs and ahs of delight: “You look so cute!” And one points out, “No one will think you’re a girl anymore.” [For the record, I never minded that; and it didn’t seem to bother him much either.]

At least one thing’s for sure: hair grows.

I love his curls, but he looks gorgeous with his new cut, too!

Lauchy said he likes CJ’s hair long because he could put a braid in it if he wants. Both girls had their hair french braided today (not by me) and I think Lauchy was envious!

When my eldest had his first haircut, we took him to a barber. HIs long golden curls were shorn off and he left looking like an army recruit. He was very cute, but…oh my heart. I cried and cried and cried. I confessed to my husband that I felt like I didn’t know my son anymore. I admit now that my reaction was over the top, but at the time I was heartbroken.

CJ still has a gorgeous mop and a very kissable neck! They all look great. Wanna do mine?

I do love cutting hair! If only you lived closer … and were willing to let me experiment. I’ve been cutting hair since my teens, when my mom would get me to cut my younger siblings’ hair, which, as they could tell you, sometimes went well and sometimes really really did not. My sister may never forgive me for the bowl cut I inflicted on her. And I will admit that I have good hair-cutting days, and sometimes the vibe is off. I was praying for a good hair-cutting day today. I think it went just fine.

But we never tried braiding it! Should have thought of that sooner.

Your children have great hair! That red.
And your son – I KNOW. My son has longish blonde hair, cut exactly the way his daddy’s hair was in the 70s. I cannot bear the thought of a shorter cut some day. For now, I give him his little 70s cut now and again.

Just took him to nursery school where all the teachers were exclaiming “Oh, where are your curls!” and I’m like no, please, say nice things that don’t make him feel sad!

Anyway, he looks darling, of course, but the curls and the length did make him unique.

I’m just glad I got to do the cutting myself.

Thanks, Tasneem. Of course, I think so too, but I’m pretty biased.
